After Sprinkler Problems, Commercial Water Removal Gear Restores Rochester Diners to Pre-Loss State
Sometimes the equipment that is installed to protect your property, such as sprinklers, can malfunction and cause damage. Contact SERVPRO right away.
SERVPRO Understands That Time is of the Essence When Remediating Commercial Water Damage
Families visiting Rochester often enjoy a quick bite at a family-friendly diner to save money while still providing a decent meal to their children. Just as parents take necessary precautions to protect their children, many business owners install protective measures such as sprinkler systems to ward off disasters. Sometimes, though, these things instead create damage to the interior of your business.
When a sprinkler system malfunctions and sends water everywhere inside your diner, commercial water removal services in Rochester can get everything back to normal again quickly. Sprinkler systems thoroughly saturate an area to put out fires effectively before they can spread and grow. This aspect means that the water ends up everywhere, much like a rain shower inside your business. SERVPRO technicians can help keep the time your diner remains closed for repairs minimal, so your business recovers more easily.
After earning their IICRC-certificates, our professional technicians continually gain additional experience in restoring businesses of all sizes and industries. Our previous customers include hospitals, restaurants, hotels, bed and breakfast establishments, and many others, providing our employees with a range of environments in which they develop new skills, work alongside our customers' employees, and learn how to avoid disrupting normal business activities. We want to help your business remain a vital part of our local economy and understand the many variables that affect your business' status.
Our water removal equipment handles the extraction of standing water, drying out of wet areas, and the elimination of elevated humidity in the air. Small-sized portable pumps that we easily operate by hand remove any accumulated water from your diner's floors. Getting the water removed from here makes things safer for us to work as well as removes a great deal of the water that can end up elsewhere if left alone.
Walls and other structures made of absorbent material dry out quickly when we use a desiccant machine, heaters, and air movers. Because this part of the water removal process further increases the humidity, we continually measure the amount of moisture. We track the progress from start to finish, so we know that everything rapidly dries out uniformly.
Because sprinkler systems can also suffer a broken line, which shoots water out in only one area instead of everywhere, we can also resolve this situation for you, as well. Elevated humidity happens in this situation, also, so we still measure these levels often.
SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester's technicians can help you continue providing the community with your delicious offerings, even after a disaster with your sprinkler system. With water removal services, your diner can get back to normal quickly. Call us at (603) 743-4301 so we can begin working on extracting the water and getting everything back to normal.

Electrical Safety During Flood Damage Restoration in Your Rochester Home
SERVPRO Says Cut Your Power Source During Flooding of Rochester Properties
SERVPRO Says Safety First, Then Water Extraction and Cleanup
If you reside in an area of Rochester that is at high risk for floods, there are measures you can take to minimize the risks and prevent property damage associated with flooding. When you know heavy rains are coming, you can use sandbags to divert the flow of water away from your home. Rain gutters and other drainage systems installed in your home are a good idea as well. If you make sure to keep your gutters and downspouts free of trash, leaves and other debris, they can help divert rainwater away from your home. Maintenance is crucial for an effective drainage system.
Grading your lot so that ten or so feet of ground that surrounds your home is sloped at least six inches also helps to funnel rainwater away from your property. If disaster strikes, and you still are dealing with water and flood damage inside your Rochester home, it is imperative that you act quickly. Our staff at SERVPRO understands how important this is, so we do not waste time getting to your property once you call us for help.
In every water damage situation, environmental hazards are present. They can include structural, electrical, and waterborne hazardous materials. Water conducts electricity, so pairing water and electricity can be very dangerous. Potentially, there can be electrical hazards all over on a water damage job site. In the case of flooding, water can enter into the wiring system, so common sense is used when we deal with electricity.
The first thing SERVPRO techs check is the power distribution box. All the breakers are on the panel, or breaker box is turned off. If only part of your home was affected, we turn off the circuits that provide power to these damaged areas. It is especially crucial for us to do so if water is inside electrical outlets or wall cavities, or if any electrical outlets are located on the floor. We may even need to have a licensed electrician perform an inspection.
Sometimes, it is necessary to shut off the main power source where it enters your home. The power usually can be turned off at a meter found outside. Cutting the power at the meter may require assistance from the local utility company. SERVPRO provides portable and trailered generators for emergency use.
When SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester needs to restore your home in Rochester, Dover, or Somersworth after flooding, we ensure that the working environment is safe from electrical hazards. When you call us at (603) 743-4301 for help, you know you are getting an experienced and knowledgeable company doing everything we can to keep you and your family safe.

Mold Damage Remediation in Rochester
SERVPRO prevents mold from spreading while cleaning and remediating mold damage in your home.
How Mold Forms and Spreads in Your Home
Sometimes mold inside your Rochester home can hide from you. Often a fungus develops when you have a slow water leak that you do not notice. Other times water leaks into an area without you realizing it causing fungi to form.
Inside buildings are suitable environments for fungal growth. SERVPRO's mold damage technicians in Rochester study fungi growth and understand how it behaves. Being knowledgeable about how a fungus acts inside a building helps us remediate the problem and prevent future growth.
To start, mold requires three things to grow in the first place. A fungus needs an organic food source, the proper temperature, and high moisture levels to grow and survive. Once fungi are present inside a building, it lets off spores that help it spread and recreate.
Therefore, any time water leaks inside your house mold can grow with the ideal conditions and the right amount of time. Most homes have many materials inside that serve as organic food for a fungus. Materials like wood and paper serve as food sources for mold.
Some types of fungus can form in extremely hot or cold temperatures. However, most molds like temperatures between 68 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Most houses keep their room temperature at around 70 degrees, a temperature that provides the perfect environment for mold growth.
Whenever water sits inside your home somewhere, whether it is from a one-time incident that went unnoticed or a slow leak, mold will likely grow on drywall, wood or any other organic materials. In most cases, it takes high levels of moisture to be present for 48 hours for mold growth to occur. Once the mold has developed, it is not very difficult for its spores to travel to other areas and create problems.
Any time a fungus is present, it creates spores so that it can reproduce. These spores can quickly become airborne and float to other parts of the building. Spores then settle to other areas and if the conditions are ideal, mold forms in the other part of the house.
When mitigating issues with mold, we always take measures to prevent mold spores from getting to other rooms inside the house. We accomplish this by setting up a containment chamber around the work area. For professional help dealing with fungal issues, call SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester at (603) 743-4301 any time of the day.

After SERVPRO thoroughly removes the water, they then begin to clean up the damages left behind.
SERVPRO Works Quickly to Remove Water and Restore Your Commercial Property
Factory employees sometimes work in hazardous conditions simply because of the type of projects involved in Rochester facilities. Some hazards can more easily happen, and preventing these may seem like an ongoing task. Other hazards take longer to accrue, with some of these situations caused by exposure of equipment to water.
Rochester factories can stop such damage by implementing the services of a commercial water removal company. When SERVPRO professionals arrive at a business that needs such services because of slow leaks, we start out by assessing the situation carefully. We use infrared thermographic sensors to detect the locations of all undesired water and trace this water back to their sources. Only after we eliminate the sources of the water do, we then begin to clean up the damage.
Slow leaks can cause copious amounts of damage to equipment and inventory, both raw and finished products. Removing the water through extraction equipment helps with visible water, but we must also gain control of any water in the form of elevated humidity.
Desiccant machines and powerful air movers help gain the control needed for such situations. We dispose of the water once collected in the machine's tanks and then recheck our meters for expected changes. Once these read normal levels, we can assure you that our work succeeded in restoring your building to normal conditions.
For large leaks and broken water lines, removing the water requires a pump truck and specialized extraction equipment. Once the source of the water no longer poses a problem, we can get started. After the extraction of the water occurs, we can help your employees wipe down machinery and fabrication stations as needed. As above, we use desiccant machines and other equipment to control the overall humidity within your factory.

Professional Water Damage Restoration Services For Somersworth Residents
Water Leaks Lead to Damage in Somersworth Properties
Identify, Assess, and Removal of Water Mitigate Damages--SERVPRO Can Help
Dealing with water damage on your Somersworth property does not always have such a straightforward answer. However, having a licensed professional team on your side can help you find the best way to correct the situation you face, assess the damages accurately, and lead to a substantially better recovery.
A qualified water damage restoration company visits your Somersworth home, investigates actual damages, and helps you determine which steps to take. Some companies may give you round-about figures. However, without seeing the damage first-hand, no one can tell you how expensive your water damage restoration may cost.
A company, like SERVPRO, whom you call to perform restoration services on your property need to assess the damages. Depending on the discoveries made during your inspection, an IICRC-industry certified technician categorizes your situation in one of three ways - "Clean Water," "Grey Water," or "Black Water."
Clean Water - Generally consists of fresh water leaks or possibly rain water. The cleanest and safest water to handle.
Grey Water - Water containing some contamination levels, usually from a broken appliance. The liquid may contain detergents or simply clean water that has absorbed dirty particles from a carpet, roof insulation, as examples. This presents minor health risks, but still requiring additional resources to remove and dry.
Black Water - Extremely contaminated-water requiring advanced care and handling procedures, such as sewage, groundwater containing fertilizers, chemicals, or flotsam from an overflowing stream or river. Any porous materials damaged by this substance typically cannot be cleaned or restored and are discarded
SERVPRO IICRC certified technicians take the length of exposure, which category, and the size or type of the affected area to determine how long your water damage restoration process might be. Specialized surfaces, total square footage, and the equipment needed to dry the property all come into play. The longer you take to seek professional help has a significant impact on the affected area, so avoid hesitation when at all possible.
SERVPRO offers a variety of cleaning and restoration services that help return your home to a quality preloss condition. We keep you informed throughout the restoration process and coordinate with you and your insurance company to ensure you get the quality and results you deserve.

Rochester's Experienced Mold Damage Team
Washing machines are indispensable but can quickly cause damage in your home if leaks go unnoticed. Should you notice or smell mold, contact SEVRPRO.
Certified Technicians Arrive Equipped to Remediate the Mold Infestation in Your Home
Sometimes appliances such as your washing machine develop a slow water leak inside your Rochester home. When water drips slowly from a source, sometimes the damage is not noticed right away. Water that sits in an area for an extended period creates an environment conducive to mold growth.
The presence of mold is not always visible. However, if water has stayed in an area for a long time, SERVPRO's mold damage experts in Rochester are available to help. If you think there is even the smallest possibility that mold exists, then it is a good idea to call in the experts.
Any time water sits in one area for a while, mold growth has a chance of occurring. Mold needs an organic food source such as wood, moisture, and the right temperature to grow. Once mold grows inside your home, mitigating the damage is essential to keep the fungi from spreading to other parts of your home. If mold spreads to other areas, then damage to other parts of the home is likely.
It is essential to have an experienced mold restoration crew like SERVPRO to remove the existing mold inside your home because fungi can cause health effects. When a fungus forms, it creates microscopic spores so that it can reproduce. These tiny spores get airborne, then settle to other areas and form more mold. Our expert crews use specialized chemicals and equipment to prevent fungi from spreading.
Some household chemicals such as bleach kill mold but not necessarily the spores a fungus creates. Our IICRC certified team equips with the industry's best anti-microbial chemicals. The crew's chemicals are made to kill both the fungus and the spores it creates.
Our experienced specialists also take other measures to prevent mold spores from spreading to other parts of the house. When mitigation work takes place, a containment chamber with negative air pressure gets set up. The air is then is sucked out of the containment chamber and into an air scrubber with a HEPA filter. This way no spores get out of the area mold is present and cause problems in other rooms inside the home.
Any time you notice standing water sitting somewhere for too long or visible signs of mold, it is smart to call in the experts. To get help with any fungi related issue, call SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester at (603) 743-4301 for help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Rapid Response to Rochester Water Damage
Customers depend on your store to pick up the items that they need before heading to an event. Contact SERVPRO right after an incident.
Team SERVPRO Arrives Equipped to Dry Out Your Water Damaged Business Quickly
For a Rochester business, any disaster can mean twice the loss. There is the damage to the building that needs repair and the inventory that needs cleaning or preserving to sell it. There is also the loss of sales income each day that the doors are closed to customers.
SERVPRO knows that Rochester commercial water damage does not have to destroy a business to shut it down. Many businesses operate on close margins and need to be open every day to ensure they can pay the rent, utilities, and their employees when the first of the month rolls around again. We do everything we can to remove water and reopen doors as quickly as possible.
In a small business like a convenience store, most of the goods are non-perishable. That is unless a broken sink sprays water across the backroom and shuts down a refrigerator case. Then, we have a very short amount of time to dry it out and return it to service.
Usually, we concentrate on drying the floors first, but this is a very unusual situation. The owner can stock the items in another case temporarily, but overstocking eventually lowers the temperature and results in more spoiled products. Even if the store can partially reopen, there is the nuisance factor, since customers who run in for a cold soda do not want to take it home to chill it. In this circumstance, SERVPRO technicians start immediately to dry out the case once we stop the source of the leak and remove any water from the floor with pumps and water extractors.
As long the water did not short out the motor, we can restore function within an hour or two by directing an air mover to force warm, dry air under the case and into the motor compartment. Once we finish with the air movers, a technician uses drying cloths to remove the last trace of moisture around the motor. As he or she takes care of this emergency task, the rest of the response team uses more air movers to completely dry the floor and dehumidifiers to lower the interior humidity.
Even when reopening to customers may take a day or two, many businesses still need a response of only hours or minutes to preserve their inventory. If you need our help, SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester maintains an on-call 24-hour response team to take of whatever the need may be. Call (603) 743-4301 today to learn more.

Why Fire Damage Restoration Services Are Viral For Rochester Residents
Though a fire damage disaster in Rochester brings about a lot of stress, communication is vital during the restoration process.
Fire Damage Restoration Services
After experiencing a fire incident on your property, we recommend fire damage restoration services as the first step towards putting your home back in shape. Immediately after the disaster, it can be hard to think straight and make the right decisions – to some Rochester residents; all may seem lost. That is why contacting professional restoration service providers is highly encouraged.
Though a fire damage disaster in Rochester brings about a lot of stress, communication is vital during the restoration process. A professional service provider like SERVPRO patiently listens to the concerns of the customer before putting in place appropriate restoration measures. Open communication lines between our technicians and the customers make us satisfy the needs of a client. In most cases, customers are encouraged to be present when we are pre-testing the damaged property.
Cleaning the smoke residues that are the result of combustion is necessary. Our team begins by locating the residues and identifying their type. After that, an appropriate method is used to capture, remove and dispose of as per the local standards. During this process, we pretest your contents to find out what we can restore and the most suitable technique to use during the restoration.
When we come across loosely attached smoke residues, we can opt for vacuuming as a removal technique. Usually, we use vacuum-cleaning as the first step before other wet cleaning techniques such as dissolving. When using dissolving, our SERVPRO technicians use a liquid cleaning product to dissolve and loosen the bond holding the particles to the surface.
After a fire, there is a possibility that the smoke residues can mix with the fire extinguishing products and cause unpleasant smells. When faced with such situations, our SERVPRO team identifies the source of the odor and does deodorization. It is a process that eliminates the odor by neutralizing its source.
SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester is a proven leader in storm, fire, mold and water damage restoration. Call us at (603) 743-4301 today and get professional services that you deserve.

Eliminating Water Damage Odors in Dover
You can not eliminate water-borne odors with candles, you can rely on SERVPRO to properly rid your home of all water damage effects.
SERVPRO’s Four Methods for Eliminating Water-Borne Odors
When it comes to removing the effects of flooding in a Dover home, most of our efforts are centered around taking out any standing water with pumps and extractor wands. Then we draw out the remaining moisture in the carpets and floorboards. Most of the work after that is lowering the humidity in a home to prevent rot, loss of building material, and to prevent mold growth.
However, to remove every effect of water damage in Dover, SERVPRO also treats the odors left behind after a burst pipe, or a rusted-out water heater leaves water throughout a home. It may seem like a minor area, but untreated odors do not simply go away over time. Untreated odors eventually ruin property and make a house unlivable. To prevent this, we have developed a series of methods which deal with every type of odor and property.
For smaller, odor generating spots on upholstered furniture or in carpets, our preferred method is Injection. We use a needle to force a deodorizing agent into the stain. The method is very useful not only for eliminating water-borne odors but for pet odors also.
For larger spots or stains, we engage in Direct Spraying. Our tools for this method are either a hand sprayer or a powered, portable spray device. It is very effective to remove almost any odor, but spraying does soak the surface, making it risky to use on fabrics where the color can run or fade.
For those fabrics and other surfaces, we have Wet Fogging. SERVPRO restoration specialists use an ultra-low volume or ULV fogger to generate tiny particles of deodorizer. These particles bind to the odor particles, which neutralizes them. We still watch surfaces closely to prevent using accidental soaking.
When any amount of moisture is a risk, we use Dry Fogging. Here, we force a deodorizing agent through a heating coil. The coil vaporizes the chemical, so it penetrates much farther into an item. The particles generated are also more effective to bind with and destroy odor-causing particles. This method works well on water-borne odors as well as smoke odors.
Eliminating the odors from water damage is as important as any other type of restoration. You cannot eliminate these odors with candles or a new coat of paint. If you want to preserve your home and its contents, call SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester at (603) 743-4301 today. We are here to help.

Mold Damage Issues Do Not Disappear During The Winter In Somersworth
Mold damage in Somersworth happens year round.
Mold Damage Issues
Of the many strains of mold that may take up residence in your Somersworth home, many are quite at home during the colder months of winter. Homeowners cannot afford to become less vigilant about mold growth because of a mistaken belief that the fungi need warm weather to grow and damage organic materials. We can help remediate current mold damage and offer solid suggestions on how to eliminate the conditions that foster mold growth.
Mold damage in Somersworth happens year round. In fact, some aspects of your home’s winter environment are very conducive to the acceleration of mold growth and eventual damage. For example, poorly or uninsulated exterior walls cause the warm, moist air inside your home to condense, offering the mold spores always floating or lying on surfaces within our homes moisture as the fuel to begin growth of one or more colonies. We are familiar with scenarios similar to this and have strategies to eliminate the water source.
During the winter months, many individuals run humidifiers because heated air can be drying, very irritating to mucous membranes. If the humidity in your home rises past 60 percent, the air itself can encourage mold growth. Limiting ambient humidity to 40 percent or less allows the relatively moist air to provide comfort yet does not generate enough water vapor to jump-start microbial infestations. SERVPRO technicians measure the moisture levels in both your home’s structures and air to help strike the balance needed.
Because windows and doors are closed in the winter, moist air generated by cooking, laundry, bathing, and showering is retained inside. If your dryer or cooktop are not directly vented outside, a buildup of moisture, and then mold, is possible. Correcting this situation with exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens and local code-approved ducts for dryers and HVAC systems with built-in humidifiers eliminate the moisture that causes molds to generate more spores and create the feathery or leathery evidence of mold. The SERVPRO technicians assigned to your remediation job know what to look for and how to eliminate the moisture.
SERVPRO mold remediators use the EPA protocol to contain and remove mold. We use negative pressure air scrubbers to avoid contaminating unaffected areas of your house with even tiny, moldy particles. The remediation we do is very effective in managing mold outbreaks if the moisture problems are also eliminated. Creating this balance makes for healthy air quality and limits the destruction of the organic materials molds use as nourishment.
SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester works with you to control mold damage throughout the year. If mold damage is suspected, call us for an evaluation and remediation plant at (603) 743-4301.

Wood Stove And Fireplace Damage Avoidance Tips For Your Rochester Home
A wood burning stove offers warmth as well as a certain ambiance to the home. Enjoy your stove while taking precautions. Contact SERVPRO after a fire.
Our Technicians Help You to Recover From a Fire While Offering Preventative Tips
Whether you use a woodstove as your primary heating source or simply enjoy the ambiance of a crackling fireplace, taking care to maintain and repair your wood burning appliances is crucial to preserving your Rochester home from the devastation of a fire. Taking the time to ensure that your fireplace or woodstove operates in tip-top condition is much less stressful than arranging for the restoration of a dwelling damaged by fire.
Adding a wood stove or fireplace to an existing home requires professional installation to minimize the risk of fire damage in Rochester. Familiarize yourself with local building codes and make sure the vendor sells stoves and inserts that comply with fire and building codes. Proper ventilation is the key to preventing smoke and carbon monoxide from spreading throughout your home. One thing that may not be obvious during installation is checking for overhanging trees or vines that could catch fire on the exterior the home. Chimney caps keep debris and curious critters from falling down the chimney and blocking the flue, sending smoke and soot drifting and threatening to ignite a chimney fire.
Be vigilant about checking for hotspots and crumbling seals on wood stoves. Your chimney requires an annual inspection and cleaning. We recommend you contract with a chimney sweep who is CSIA Certified; a CSIA certified chimney sweep with 10 or more years of service in New Hampshire is a CSIA Master Chimney Sweep. A thorough cleaning reveals issues like a heavy buildup of creosote or birds nest or other blockages that contribute to the threat of a chimney fire. The sweep also may find evidence of chimney fires or overheating of which you were unaware, weakening the chimney and making it more likely to burn again. Proper repairs must be made if this is the case.
Operational Safety Measures
Keep a charged fire extinguisher within reach of your wood stove or fireplace at all times. Store matches, lighters, and any accelerant far from the source of the fire. Indoor caches of wood need to be at least three feet away from the fire, minimizing the chance of a spark setting them ablaze. Window treatments; pillows, newspaper, books, and magazines; throws and blankets; and other decor or furnishings need have that three-foot safety space as well.
Take care to dispose of the ashes safely and appropriately. Clear out old ashes regularly to avoid their dispersal throughout your home when a new fire starts. Scoop cold ashes into a metal container and store outside, far from your structure.
Invest in a screen to keep your fireplace sparks from flying out and igniting nearby objects or fixtures. The screen also keeps children and pets out of harm's way. Choose wood carefully -- seasoned hardwood burns cleaner. Buy fireplace pokers and other tools for durability and fireproof characteristics, not merely for their beauty.

Insulating Pipes: Protect Your Rochester Home's Plumbing from Water Damage
Frozen Pipes Cause Water Damage to Rochester Homes
Rochester Properties, Preparation, and Insulation Can Prevent Water Problems Says SERVPRO
Would you like to prevent water damage to your Rochester home? You should be thinking about weatherproofing your indoor pipes. The bottom line is this: harsh winters equal freezing water, and that water freezing inside of your home’s plumbing can spell all manner of trouble for you.
Water expanding (through becoming a solid) inside of your pipes can result in the pipes bursting apart. This will leave openings or completely separated portions of pipe that can flow water directly onto the floors, inside of walls, or even cause flooding issues for lower levels of houses. While water damages to your Rochester home might be easy repairs for our team here at SERVPRO, this is an unfortunate restoration bill that potentially could be avoided.
With winter being an annual certainty, there is never a wrong time to prepare your plumbing. Buy insulating sleeves that fit over the pipes completely. Ensure that all portions that you can access are covered, leaving no exposed areas to be adversely affected by the cold. Another preventative measure for especially cold areas of your home that have plumbing running through the walls or ceilings, is to purchase a low-cost space heater. This can allow you to control better the warmth reaching those pipes and prevent freezing.
If you do encounter ruptured plumbing, causing any matter of water damage to your home, you can help yourself out by shutting off the service line feeding water to the house. This valve is regularly located where your water service line comes into your home from the water meter on your property. Shutting that valve can prevent water from continually pumping through the broken pipe, and keep the current level of damage from getting any worse.
At SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester, we have the skills and the experience to restore your home quickly. If you are dealing with any manner of water damage, give us a call 24/7 at (603) 743-4301.

Why Inventory Matters When It Comes To Water Damage In Dover Restaurants
The ERP Can Mitigate Water Damage in Your Dover Restaurant and Keep Your Food Cooking
Restaurant Stock Costs Money, Protect Your Investment with SERVPRO's ERP Plan
Water damage is a risk for most restaurants. Most business owners take great care of their premises, but the best care in the world cannot always prevent a broken dishwasher, damaged roof, or leaking faucet. Water damage happens faster than you think, and for Dover business owners that means having to shut up shop for removal and cleanup.
SERVPRO recommends all restaurants in the Dover area take note of their inventory, in preparation for water damage. When a problem arises, it is too late to notice what is on the premises and what to move, save, or otherwise protect from moisture. Draw up a list of everything you have, before disaster strikes.
The best place to start is food and beverages. Keep an up to date inventory of all foodstuffs and drinks kept in your business. Take note of items that you need to move when a leak or spill happens. For example, you might relocate all your stores of baking ingredients to a different room if their location gets wet.
Know in advance what you have, and where to put it to get it out of harm’s way. Do not stop with perishables, however. Paper such as ledgers and wage slips is susceptible to water damage, and so is electronic equipment such as your computer, cash register, card reader, or telephone. Plan to move any vulnerable items as soon as you spot a leak.
One of the easiest ways to take stock of everything in your business is SERVPRO’s Emergency Ready Plan. ERP is an app which is free to download. We recommend installing it on a tablet so you can walk through your business while you follow the on-screen instructions.
Taking inventory is helpful in other ways as well. Keeping an up to date list means you can better manage your stocks and buying cycle, which helps keep your business in good financial shape.
Do not forget to include your local SERVPRO representative as a contact in your Emergency Ready Profile. That way, you can contact us quickly in the event of water damage so we can act fast and restore your business “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO is available 24/7 for your fire damage woes.
Fire Damage Cleanup Goes A Long Way In Your Rochester Home
Even when we are extra careful, tragedy can strike. A fire in your Rochester home can break out due to a crimped or frayed electrical cord. If it is caught quickly, the damage can be contained to one room. However, you still have plenty of cleanup and repairs that need to be addressed. It is not something you should attempt on your own, as there are many aspects to fire damage cleanup.
When a fire disaster has struck your Rochester home, it is essential that you get professional help as soon as possible. Contact our staff at SERVPRO once the fire is out so we can assist you in getting your home back to its usual condition. We have the tools and experience needed to work quickly, but efficiently.
The goal of mitigation is to secure your structure and stop further damage. Mitigation can include boarding up openings if needed, winterizing the plumbing to stop pipes from freezing and establishing a temporary source of electricity to the home. Emergency drying is needed if your home is wet from fire-fighting efforts.
SERVPRO technicians focus on cleaning smoke residues from your home and deodorizing odors which are given off by residues. If there are items which cannot be cleaned, we discuss this with you and replace or repair anything needed. Sometimes, items need to be packed out and moved to a different location for cleaning and storage when the building is not secure, or it is too damaged for on-site cleaning.
For specific items like electronics, expensive artwork, refinishing furniture or dry-cleaning clothing, we work with other specialists.
We occasionally need to perform reconstruction on structural components that are damaged by the fire beyond the point where they could be restored to preloss condition. It can also require different skills than standard home remodeling, so in this case, we work with other licensed contractors as well.

Remediating Flood Damage in Rochester
After flood damage, SERVPRO's first step is to complete an inspection of your home to properly mitigate the damage.
SERVPRO's Thorough Flood Damage Restoration Process
Being just minutes from the coast makes flooding a regular occurrence in Rochester. If it is not the storm itself, how it affects nearby creeks and Baxter Lake can cause millions of dollars in clean-up and repair costs each year.
Remediating the effects of flood damage in Rochester requires a quick response and trained personnel to put residents back to their homes as fast and safe as possible. To meet this demand, SERVPRO maintains a 24-hour response team. We have the latest in training approved by the restoration industry and access to a nationwide network of equipment.
We start each call with an inspection of the home. We check to ensure the power is off before entering the home in case the rising water compromised the electrical system. The inspector determines how high the water has risen to ensure our team has the proper equipment and how long the home has been under water.
Next, we take out the water. Our IICRC-certified technicians use commercial grade pumps to remove water over two inches in depth. For amounts lower than that we use water extraction wands to draw out all visible water. These same wands also draw out water trapped inside the carpets and floors. In most cases, we complete pumping out water in less than a day.
To try and preserve the carpets and floors, we remove the pad underneath for disposal. If there is no pad, we attempt to dry underneath the carpet using air movers and exhaust fans at opposite ends of the room or hallway to force warm, dry air across the surface.
For wood floors, we examine the floorboards for warping. Technicians drill several holes in the corners or remove a floorboard to perform a visual check. They insert a hose connected to an air mover to dry out underneath the floorboards if there is water present.
Carpets and floors take most of the damage in a flood, but SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester is ready to prevent the loss of structural property. If you need our services or have questions about what we can do to return your home to its pre-flood condition; call us today at (603) 743-4301.

There are Different Reasons Behind the Development of Mold Damage in Your Dover Attic
Excess Moisture Leads to Mold Damage in Dover Homes
Mold Prevention is Better Than Mold Remediation
The world is full of microbes. Mold is one of the most commonly known of these life forms. In Dover, attics can hold a multitude of these microorganisms. In most conditions, they create little damage, but when certain factors arise, fungi can begin growing out of control and create extensive damage to your attic.
Dover homeowners who know how to prevent mold damage can protect their homes better than residents who do not understand how microbes react to indoor environments. Knowing why mold grows more rapidly can help to avoid the situations that allow mold damage to happen. Overlooking the attic of a home as a place of mold infestation happens quite often. However, it can be home to millions of individual microorganisms and their spores, simply waiting for the needed moisture to become active.
One reason mold forms in an attic is because heat gets trapped inside. The snow that melts quicker in one area on your roof can help you determine where a ventilation blockage might exist. The heat inside your attic can also hold moist air, allowing for condensation and mold growth. Clearing away anything that blocks the vent system can eliminate this problem.
Another situation involving an attic which you can investigate by looking at melted snow on your roof is missing or damaged insulation. When this happens, ice dams become more likely. Seeping water can provide mold the moisture needed to start heavy growth to occur. Replacing the insulation can prevent warm areas on the roof, and the subsequent damming.
Ice damming on the roof is not the only reason a roof can leak. A series of cracks around the chimney, loose shingles, rodent activity and some other reasons can cause a roof to leak during even a short rain shower. Finding the leak might require a SERVPRO professional, but checking out your attic with the lights off on a bright sunny day can sometimes show where holes exist. Gently putting a wire or other stiff material through the hole can mark it on the roof for later repair work.
Our experienced Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT) can help point out other areas that can pose problems with mold damage. Prevention is always easier to implement than restoration and is less costly. Minimize the disruption in your family's daily activities and routines by preventing problems that microbial growth can cause.
SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester has technicians who are always available to not only take your call but to provide experienced mold remediation and mold damage prevention. Contact us at (603) 743-4301 so we can help you in protecting your home.

Will My Dover Home be Flood Damaged in the Next Storm?
If your home is at a lower elevation, it is more likely to experience flooding.
Three Reasons Your Home May Flood During a Rainstorm
New Hampshire has a relatively wet climate, meaning rain and snowstorms are frequent throughout the year. Why, then, do some cause flood damage in Dover, while other seemingly worse storms cause minimal damage? There are many qualities of a storm that contribute to its flood risk, and raw rainfall numbers can sometimes be misleading as a determiner of flood risk. While deluges do almost always cause some amount of flooding, even less than an inch of rain can potentially lead to significant flooding in the area. Here's how you can tell if your home might flood in a future storm.
Unstable and Saturated Soil
Saturated or unstable soil has significant potential to cause flood damage in Dover. When the soil has been upturned on a large scale or saturated with water, its ability to absorb and contain rainwater decreases sharply. Construction sites or past landslides near your home could increase the likelihood of your home flooding in future storms.
If your home is on a hilltop, the chances of it flooding are much lower than other nearby areas. Conversely, SERVPRO sees an increased rate of flooding for homes at lower elevations or in flat areas. Homes that are higher relative to the surrounding area are less likely to flood. Note that raw elevation has little say in this, as even a home that is five thousand feet above sea level may still flood if most of the community is at a higher elevation.
Rainfall Levels and Location
Heavy rain is the most impactful factor behind whether your neighborhood floods and how severe the damage is, but the location of that rainfall can be equally important. Rain that falls directly on your home or uphill from it is likely to be much more dangerous than storms concentrated further away or on lower-elevation areas.
SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester is ready 24/7 to respond to reports of storm flooding in the local area. We get there faster and begin treatments sooner to help eliminate damage at its source. Call us at (603) 743-4301.

Why Seek Professional Help For Mold Damage In Dover
Once you recognize that there is an excessive amount of mold present in your home, it is time to call SERVPRO to investigate the cause and remediate.
Prevent or Combat a Mold Infestation With the Help of Our Certified SERVPRO Technicians
One of the complications, when water saturates your home's structure and belongings, is mold growth and damage. If moisture continues unabated, a Dover building can show signs of mold infestation within 24 to 48 hours. Proper cleanup of the mold must follow the procedures developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a task that is best completed by mold remediation professionals.
Mold damage in Dover is both unsightly and hazardous when found in a dwelling. The mold spores activate when they come in contact with a source of moisture, and they then multiply on organic surfaces like wood, drywall, and fabrics. Mold harms the surfaces where it is found, consuming the materials it inhabits which causes them to weaken. Our mold remediators receive advanced instruction in effective methods to remove current mold damage and ways to prevent future infestations.
When a mold colony grows, it produces additional mold spores which can cause health effects in individuals sensitive or allergic to these substances. Because of this possibility, it is crucial to deal with the outbreak in such a way that mold particles do not spread throughout your dwelling. SERVPRO invests in up to date equipment that contains the mold problem through negative air pressure and several HEPA filters. These air scrubbers are most effective when used by our certified personnel, who further protect themselves with personal protective equipment during the mold remediation.
Once the moldy area is contained with plastic barriers and air scrubbers, we remove the colonies and any surfaces the roots of the mold infiltrate. SERVPRO technicians are familiar with local requirements for disposal of this hazardous waste, and we discard the moldy materials carefully. We proceed to the application of antimicrobial treatments on non-porous surfaces within the moldy area to slow or halt the growth of further mold.
Before mold remediation completes, SERVPRO crews seek and eliminate the moisture source that led to the mold damage. Mold spores are always present, but without water they usually are benign. We find the leak or condensation and arrange to have this issue resolved so that excessive moisture disappears. Mold can proliferate just because of high levels of humidity in your home, so we work with you to lower ambient humidity to between 30 and 50 percent.
Count on SERVPRO of Dover-Rochester to have the crews and equipment to contain and remove active mold colonies in your home safely and quickly. If you suspect mold has taken hold in your property, call (603) 743-4301 for a speedy consultation and professional remediation plan.

Be Aware Of The Hidden Signs Of Water Damage In Dover
SERVPRO Tips for Water Damage in Dover Homes--Keep Checking for Leaks and Stains
SERVPRO Suggestions to Spot Water Damage in Your Home
Water damage is something no homeowner wants to face. A leaking appliance, broken washer hose or a plumbing problem can all-cause water damage. Leaks that are not treated harm your Dover home and cause structural damage. Unchecked water problems even carry a risk of mold growth.
SERVPRO recommends that homeowners in Dover check for hidden signs of water damage. There are obvious signs such as a pool of water on a floor or drips running down an internal wall. Visible signs of leaks are your cue to call us straight away – We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster. However, there are some hidden signs of water damage to look for, too. Watch out for these, and you could save yourself a lot of time and expense.
Water stains – if there is a rusted looking stain on your ceiling, there might be a leak. Check out your ceilings regularly for stains or water marks.
Peeling wallpaper or raised paint – a leak behind a wall often causes wallpaper to peel away from the surface, and it might also create raised lines or spots in the paint.
Swollen wood – water causes wood to swell. SERVPRO finds that for some of our customers, the first sign of a leak is a swollen wooden door or cabinet.
Wet patches without a spill – if you notice damp patches in your carpet or on your wood or tile floors, pay attention. Sometimes a wet patch simply means a spill that no one told you about, but sometimes it means a leak.
Dark grout on tile floors – water damage causes the grout to get wet and even grow mold, which results in darker coloration. Keep an eye on tiled floors, especially around the toilet, tub, dishwasher, or in the laundry room.
When you notice one of these signs of hidden water damage, SERVPRO is on hand to help remedy the situation. We carry out a thorough assessment of your home, including the use of moisture meters and probes to test for moisture inside walls, behind cabinetry, and under floors. Our IICRC-certified technicians are equipped with extraction wands, pumps, dehumidifiers and air movers to handle the moisture and restore your home quickly.

Homeowners: Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Below-Freezing Weather
As the weather dips into colder temperatures, it is crucial to protect your home’s water pipes against freezing. Untreated pipes in your basement and crawlspaces can be an expensive and scary scenario for any homeowner.
Why Frozen Pipes Are a Problem
Water expands as it freezes. This expansion puts extreme pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor water faucets, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Also, pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.
A 1/8-inch crack in a pipe can leak up to 250 gallons of water a day, causing flooding, serious structural damage, and the immediate potential for mold.
In the U.S., frozen pipes cause significant damage every year, but they often can be prevented. Taking a few simple steps, even now, may save you a lot of aggravation and expense.
There are three common causes of frozen pipes:
1. Quick drops in temperature
2. Poor insulation
3. Thermostats set too low
Luckily, there are a number of preventative steps you can take to keep your pipes from freezing:
- Check the insulation of pipes in your home’s crawl spaces and attic. Exposed pipes are most susceptible to freezing.
- Heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables can be used to wrap pipes. Be sure to use products approved by an independent testing organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories Inc., and only for the use intended (exterior or interior). Closely follow all manufacturers’ installation and operation instructions.
- Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located. Look for air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes, and use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out. With severe cold, even a tiny opening can let in enough cold air to cause a pipe to freeze.
- Use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house.
- A trickle of hot and cold water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall.
- Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night. You might be in the habit of turning down the heat when you’re asleep, but further drops in the temperature – more common overnight – could catch you off guard and freeze your pipes.
- Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to uninsulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
If Your Pipes Do Freeze ...
- If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, leave the faucets turned on and call a plumber.
- If your house or basement is flooding, turn off the water valve and call 1-800-SERVPRO.
- Do not touch or use electrical appliances in areas of standing water due to electrocution concerns.
- Never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flame because it could cause a fire hazard. Every year, many building fires are caused by people trying to thaw frozen pipes. All open flames in homes present a serious fire danger, as well as a severe risk of exposure to lethal carbon monoxide.
- You may be able to thaw a frozen pipe with the warm air from a hair dryer. Start by warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest section of pipe.
- Again, if your water pipes have already burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve in the house; leave the water faucets turned on and call 1-800-SERVPRO. Make sure everyone in your family knows where the water shutoff valve is and how to open and close it. Likely places for the water turn-off valve include internal pipes running against exterior walls or where water service enters a home through the foundation.
- If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat set to a temperature no lower than 55°F.
9 Positive Effects of Giving to Charity
You might be surprised to learn that, ultimately, it might be you who reaps some of the best rewards of your donation. Here are nine positive effects of giving to charity.
1. Experience More Pleasure
In research conducted by the National Institutes of Health2, participants who chose to donate a portion of $100 they were provided enjoyed activated pleasure centers in the brain. Although this experiment was controlled and scientific, it did show that donating money simply makes you feel better, which is something we can all benefit from.
2. Help Others in Need
We don't live in a perfect world, and there's never going to be a perfect time to give—but there are always people out there in need of help.
3. Get a Tax Deduction
If you give to an IRS-approved charity, you can write off donations on your tax return. Donating your cash is a great way to reduce the amount of money you send off to Uncle Sam, and for a good cause, to boot.
4. Bring More Meaning to Your Life
When you donate money to charity, you create opportunities to meet new people who believe in the same causes that inspire you. That, and making a real impact on those causes, can infuse your everyday life with more meaning.
5. Promote Generosity in Your Children
When your kids see you donating money, they're much more likely to adopt a giving mindset as they grow up.
6. Motivate Friends and Family
When you let your friends and family know of your charitable donations, they may find themselves more motivated to undertake their own efforts to give.
7. Realize that Every Little Bit Helps
You don't need $10,000 to make a difference in someone's life. In developing countries, even just a few US dollars could result in a week's worth of meals for a starving child, much-needed medical attention, and even improved schooling.
8. Improve Personal Money Management
If you set a scheduled $100 donation each month for a particular charity, that can motivate you to be more attentive to your own finances in an effort to ensure you don't default or fall behind in your monthly donations. Anything that gets you to pay closer attention to your bank account is a good thing—especially when it helps those in need.
9. Give, If You Can't Volunteer
This might not necessarily be a positive effect of charitable giving, but if you're too busy to volunteer or otherwise donate your time, giving money is the perfect workaround. Never think that you can't improve someone's life or the world itself if your personal or professional schedule won't allow the time. Writing out a check is a simple way to show you're willing to help others in any way you can.
Do you know of any other positive effects of donating money to charity?
